Obituary of Alman Irvin Butler, Colonel US Army (Retired)
Alman Irvin Butler, Colonel US Army (Retired), 88, passed from this life to the next on Sunday, April 25, 2021, at his home in Pawleys Island, SC.
Born in Meridian, Mississippi, Thanksgiving Day November 24, 1932, he was a son of the late Sam Alman Butler and Clara Dewease Butler.
Colonel Butler entered the Army in 1952 as an enlisted man at Ft. Jackson, SC. He attended Officer Candidate School and was commissioned Second Lieutenant, Infantry in 1954. He soon successfully completed flight training in the Spring of 1955 and was designated Army Aviator. Overseas assignments were in Germany (2 tours), Korea, and Vietnam (2 tours). Colonel Butler completed education requirements of Bachelors Degree from University of Nebraska and Master of Business Administration at Auburn University, Alabama.
Military training included Advanced Infantry Officers Course, Command and General Staff College, and the Air War College. Colonel Butler served for two years on the Army General Staff in the Pentagon. His flying career led to a designation of Master Army Aviator. Colonel Butler’s decorations and awards include: Silver Star (1 OLC) Legion of Merit (1 OLC), Distinguished Flying Cross (7 OLC), Purple Heart, Bronze Star, Meritorious Service Medal, and the Air Medal (55 OLC). Colonel Butler’s military career spanned some 30 years.
Surviving include his wife of 33 years, Susan Hines Butler; daughters, Alicia Rue Carroll and Melissa Lyn Wright and her husband, James; granddaughters, Carolyn Rue Watson English, Alicen Alman Wright, and Carlie Dallas Wright; grandsons, Taylor Clay Carroll and Johnathon Seaborn Watson; great-grandchildren Braiden and Arya English; brothers, James Wyatt Butler and Roger Neil Butler.
A memorial service with full military honors will be held at Noon on Monday, May 24, 2021, at First Baptist Church Georgetown, with Dr. Ted Sherrill officiating.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church.
